Buffalo Bills

With the #12 Overall pick in the Draft, the Bills selected Marshawn Lynch, runningback from California. With Patrick Willis gone, this was a great pick. They also could have gone with a cornerback in Darrelle Revis or Leon Hall, but Lynch was a safe pick. In the 2nd Round, Buffalo traded up for Paul Posluszny, linebacker from Penn State. This was a great move by the Bills Front Office. Linebacker was a pretty big need for them, and they filled it with a true leader in Posluszny. In the 3rd Round, the Bills selected Trent Edwards, quarterback from Stanford. Edwards was a steal here, as it was very surprising that he lasted this long. Great pick. With their 4th Round selection, the Bills continued to add to their stable of runningbacks, drafting Dwayne Wright from Fresno State. Wright is a bigger runningback and should form a nice 1-2 punch with Lynch. In the 6th Round, Buffalo selected John Wendling, safety from Wyoming. Wendling was another steal. I was very surprised to see him fall as far as he did. This was a great value pick for the Bills. With their first pick in the 7th Round, the Bills selected Derek Schouman, fullback from Boise State. This was a pretty good pick. Schouman, at the least, should be capable of providing help on special teams. With their second pick in the 7th Round, the Bills drafted CJ Ah You, defensive end from Oklahoma. I like this pick here. Ah You is a solid defensive end and should bring some nice depth to the Bills defensive line.

Grade: A-

Buster Davis LB Florida State

I recently had the chance to speak with Buster Davis, the linebacker from Florida State. I personally feel that Davis is one of the Top 3 inside linebackers in this year's draft. Here's what he had to say:

Shawn Zobel: Thanks for taking the time out of your busy schedule.

Buster Davis: No problem Shawn.

Shawn Zobel: Where would you rank yourself among the other linebackers in this year's draft.

Buster Davis: Number one. I think that I'm the best.

Shawn Zobel: How are you able to overcome your lack of size?

Buster Davis: I don't think that I have a lack of size. I'm just not your prototypical linebacker.

Shawn Zobel: What do you think about your teammate Lawrence Timmons and how he projects for the NFL?

Buster Davis: I think that the sky is the limit for Lawrence. He is an explosive player, but is still a bit raw.

Shawn Zobel: What was your favorite moment of your collegiate career?

Buster Davis: It was definitely the Miami (FL) game this past season.

Shawn Zobel: Who was the best player that you faced against during your college career?

Buster Davis: Anquan Boldin.

Shawn Zobel: Are there any teams in particular that you've noticed have been paying more attention to you?

Buster Davis: No, I don't think so.

Shawn Zobel: Where do you see yourself being drafted?

Buster Davis: I think that I will be drafted within the Top 45 - Top 50 picks.

Shawn Zobel: Do you have any plans for Draft Day?

Buster Davis: I'll be hanging out with my family. We are going to have a barbeque.

Shawn Zobel: What was your favorite NFL team growing up, and did you have a favorite player?

Buster Davis: My favorite team was the Baltimore Ravens and my favorite player is Ray Lewis.

Shawn Zobel: Which NFL player are you most looking forward to going up against?

Buster Davis: Ladanian Tomlinson.

Shawn Zobel: Which NFL player would you compare yourself to?

Buster Davis: None. I am my own unique player.

Shawn Zobel: What training have you done since the Combine?

Buster Davis: I have been working out in Atlanta.

Shawn Zobel: What do you plan to do once your playing career is over?

Buster Davis: I would like to go up to the booth and be a broadcaster for ABC or ESPN. I would also like to coach.

Shawn Zobel: When you get your first professional paycheck, what is the first thing that you will buy?

Buster Davis: I'm going to buy a new house.

Shawn Zobel: Thanks Buster.

Day One

NFL COMBINE, DAY 1 WORKOUTS

Offensive Line & Tight Ends

Day 1 from the Combine brought a few surprises and some excitement, but overall it was about what I expected.

The Offensive Lineman were to first to go through workouts this morning. At the 40-yard dash, Allen Barbre was the most impressive, running an unofficial 4.86. Barbre (6-4, 300), who is from Missouri Southern State, is a smaller named player, but he was one that really stuck out today. He was impressive throughout all of his workouts and definitely raised his stock. At center, Ryan Kalil continued to impress the scouts, following up his great workouts from the Senior Bowl. Kalil (6-2, 299), ran a 4.96 40-yard dash, and solidified himself as the top center prospect and a possible 1st Round Pick. One player who I have been very impressed with is James Marten, an offensive tackle from Boston College. Since the Senior Bowl, his stock has been on the rise. He came in this weekend and turned out a solid performance (4.99 40) and likely elevated his stock to a 2nd or 3rd Round Pick. Another player who I am a big fan of is Tony Ugoh, the offensive tackle from Arkansas. During his workouts he injured his quad and was told by the doctors that he would be done for the day. Through perseverance, Ugoh accepted the challenge and went out finished the workouts with a very strong effort. Lastly, the offensive lineman who is likely to be a Top-5 Pick this season, Joe Thomas from Wisconsin (6-6, 311), recorded a fine workout (4.96 40) and really showed why he deserves to be mentioned among the top players in the nation.

After the workouts that the tight ends went through today, there should be one name that everyone should become familiar with: Greg Olsen. Olsen (6-5, 254) lit the combine up on Saturday with his 4.45 40-yard dash time. The second place tight end didn't even come within .2 seconds of him, which is an amazing gap. If there was one player that made himself some money today, it was Olsen. Day 1 of the combine also featured the only Division-III prospect that was invited to workout at this year's event. Michael Allan (6-6, 255), from Whitworth College, was that second place tight end in the 40-yard dash (4.67) behind Greg Olsen. He displayed a fantastic workout and surprised many scouts by how showing how talented he actually is. Zach Miller, who many scouts thought was the number one tight end coming into this weekend, didn't turn out the best workout. He ran a below average 40 (4.83) for how highly he has been regarded among scouts, and dropped a few balls in the gauntlet drill. Lastly, there was one player that caught my eye, who not many people have been talking about. Kevin Boss from Western Oregon quietly performed very well. He caught every ball that was thrown to him and ran a pretty good 40-yard dash (4.74). I think that he could be a good late round-undrafted free agent for a team.

I am looking forward to Day 2 of the Combine from Indianapolis. Although quarterbacks Brady Quinn and Jamarcus Russell won't be working out, I am very excited to see Adrian Peterson, Marshawn Lynch, and Calvin Johnson show what they can do!

Keenan Burton WR Kentucky

This summer, I was able to speak with Keenan Burton, wide receiver from Kentucky. In this upcoming 2007 season, Kentucky's offense is expected to be one of the top units in all of college football. As the #1 wideout for the Wildcats, Burton will be expected to perform as well as he did last year (77 receptions, 1036 yards, 12 TD's), if not better.

Shawn Zobel: Keenan, thanks for taking the time out of your schedule for this interview.

Keenan Burton: Sure thing Shawn.

Shawn Zobel: First off, is it true that you have a 43.5 inch vertical jump?

Keenan Burton: I'm honestly not sure. That's what I've heard; I just went out and did my jumps. I'm hoping to impress the scouts with my leaping ability.

Shawn Zobel: How are you feeling about this upcoming season?

Keenan Burton: I feel pretty good. I'm very excited and can't wait for it to get started.

Shawn Zobel: What would you say are your strengths and weaknesses as a football player?

Keenan Burton: I think that I can out-jump any defensive back, and I am a very versatile receiver. I am a deep threat as well as being able to catch the ball over the middle.

Shawn Zobel: What NFL player do you look up to the most?

Keenan Burton: I looked up to Jerry Rice. He was the complete receiver. Right now, I like the game of Chad Johnson. I'm not as vocal as he is, but he catches a lot of passes and does a lot for his team.

Shawn Zobel: What are your goals for this upcoming season?

Keenan Burton: I want to get better after every game, and I want to play hard on every down. I would also like go to a bowl game.

Shawn Zobel: How do you feel about the potential of your teammates Andre Woodson, Rafael Little, and Jacob Tamme?

Keenan Burton: We all have great potential; it's now time to team together and get the job done.

Shawn Zobel: What was your favorite team growing up?

Keenan Burton: I would say the Dallas Cowboys. I played runningback in little league, so I really looked up to Emmitt Smith.

Shawn Zobel: Who is the best player in college football that you have gone up against?

Keenan Burton: It was easily LaRon Landry, the safety from LSU. He plays hard on every play and his skills are intimidating.

Shawn Zobel: So you think that he was worth the #6 Overall pick?

Keenan Burton: Definitely. The Redskins got their money's worth with that pick.

Shawn Zobel: Thanks Keenan.

Senior Bowl Coverage

The Senior Bowl is officially over. While the practices and the game are in the past, you can still view Draft Headquarters coverage from Mobile right here. While stationed live from Senior Bowl, Draft Headquarters provided the most up-to-date information on the web. as well as doing interviews and writing detailed analysis of each practice. All of the links from the Senior Bowl week are listed below.

Senior Bowl Live Blog

Welcome to the 2008 Senior Bowl Blog, live from Mobile, Alabama. I'll update the progress of my trip here, while also providing everything that I see and hear from Mobile.

Jan 26th (6:33 PM) - I just finished up the live blog for the game. Boy was that finish exciting! You can read through the blog transcript right here. This is the last post from Mobile as I'm signing off on my coverage from the Senior Bowl. I'll be updating the regular blog on the site and everything will be back to normal starting tomorrow. Hopefully you enjoyed the coverage. The work was hard, but overall it was a lot of fun. Thanks guys!

Jan 26th (2:36 PM) - It's game day and the Senior Bowl is about to begin in about 25 minutes. The live blog is ready to go and will begin at kickoff, which is scheduled for 4:00 PM EST.

Jan 25th (10:36 PM) - The Senior Bowl stock watch is posted as this will be the last post of the day. Tomorrow should be pretty busy as we've got the Senior Bowl and the live blog here on the site at 3:00 PM Central. Again, the live blog will take place as the game is going on and visitors can submit their comments, whether it's on the game in general or just a question that they'd like for me to answer. See ya tomorrow!

Jan 25th (6:01 PM) - My interview with Hawaii quarterback Colt Brennan is up. Click here to check it out

Jan 25th (10:53 AM) - I've posted the page where the live blog will be for tomorrow's game. You can check it out here.

Jan 25th (10:14 AM) - Big news today as Wisconsin cornerback Jack Ikegwuonu will not play football in 2008 and his career in football could be in question. Ikegwuonu blew out his knee Tuesday when training for the Combine in Davie, Florida. Ikegwuonu tore his ACL, MCL, and has damage to his kneecap. Before this injury, Ikegwuonu was being projected as a 3rd or 4th Round pick. Now, he'll be lucky to be drafted as he will not be able to take part in the Combine or in Wisconsin's Pro Day. There's a chance that a team could take him with a late-round pick to secure his rights in case he is able to make a comeback from this injury.

Jan 24th (9:27 PM) - I'm done for the night. There's not much going on as most, if not all scouts have left town. I'm not going to have a report up tomorrow as the practices are just one hour walk-through's without pads; in other words, the practices are hard to scout, which is why everyone has left. I'm hoping to get the stock watch and an article for Rotoworld.com done within the next day or two and there is still the live blog on Saturday for the game. The game starts at 4:00 PM EST and is on NFL Network. Continue to check back as I'll try to update the blog, but there really isn't much going on until the game takes place on Saturday.

Jan 24th (2:55 PM) - The report from this afternoon's practice is up. Over the course of the next two days, I'll have a stock watch and the live blog for the actual game on Saturday.

Jan 24th (12:37 PM) - I've posted the practice report from this morning. The weather was not fun as it was raining and there was a strong wind. All of the scouts were huddled up underneath the overhang from the press box. One more note: I was able to get a great interview with Hawaii quarterback Colt Brennan last night. I'll hopefully have that posted at somepoint this weekend. I'm off to the South Team practice this afternoon and as always, I'll have the practice report up as soon as I get back.

Jan 24th (8:27 AM) - Everything from yesterday is posted: practice reports, press conference notes, pictures. I'll be heading to the stadium again to see the North Team practice this morning and will have the report up by this afternoon. Again, for the most up-to-date info on the web, there is no place better than Draft Headquarters.

Jan 23rd (10:42 PM) - I've uploaded the rest of the pictures from today, including four from the press conference that took place this evening. Another thing, as I mentioned earlier this week, former Ole Miss coach Ed Oregeron is down here. Oregeron has signed on with the New Orleans Saints to be their defensive line coach for this season. One last note for tonight, I'm still planning on doing a live blog for the game on Saturday. This is indeed "live" in that visitors can post comments or ask questions and I'll give my thoughts literally as the game is being played. I'll have it posted likely on Friday, but it won't officially start up until game time on Saturday. This is the last post for tonight as I'll be up bright and early again tomorrow morning.

Jan 23rd (9:17 PM) - Just got back to the hotel. I'm about to upload some more pictures from today. Here are the notes from this evening's press conference:

- Lane Kiffin is pleased with how the North Team has played so far. He thinks Joe Flacco has a very strong arm and is still transitioning from the shotgun formation that he ran at Delaware. He said Lavelle Hawkins has really helped himself so far this week.  Of Sam Baker, Kiffin said that he helped himself a lot by going back to USC for his senior year. He mentioned that Carl Nicks can play both guard and tackle and has done a nice job of working at both. Dan Connor, in Kiffin's eyes, fits more of an inside linebacker role for the Raiders scheme. He really likes Connor's leadership and that he's a competitor. He thinks that the players have done a nice job of learning the playbook. Kiffin mentioned that Chad Henne has had impressive velocity and he's thrown the ball around extremely well. He said that Henne does a great job of taking charge in the huddle. Per Kiffin, Shawn Crable is a good athlete that can do a number of things and Jordy Nelson has great hands, rarely drops any balls, and is a hard worker.

 - Mike Nolan reported that Early Doucet had a hamstring injury and was going to try and play on Saturday if it was feeling alright. They brought in Dexter Jackson from Appalachian State for Limas Sweed who is done because of his wrist injury that knocked him out during the season. When asked about the fight today between Heath Benedict and Kendall Langford, he said that he likes it because it means that they both care about the game of football and how well they are doing. He also said that he didn't like that they were swinging at each other's helmets as they could break their hands. Overall, he likes the toughness of all of the offensive lineman. Of Leodis McKelvin, Nolan said that he is athletic, but could stand to bulk up at the next level. He has nice abilites and has done a good job. Nolan mentioned that the 49ers are looking for a big running back this offseason that can take a load off of Frank Gore next year.

 - Both Keith Rivers and Eddie Royal said they were honored and thankful to be here in Mobile. Rivers said that he'd like to show the scouts his versatility by playing different positions at linebacker and Royal said that he wanted to show that he's an every-down receiver and that he is capable of picking up a team's playbook. He also added that he wanted to show the scouts the type of person that is. Rivers said that he has nothing to hide from the scouts and that he wanted to show them that he is smart, is a character guy, and is good with the X's and O's of football. He added that he's trying to be physical and show his mean streak, and he understands that everything that he does is either an audition or an interview for the scouts. When asked what each player got from their respective schools, Royal said that he loved Coach Frank Beamer because he's a family guy and because he's the best special teams coach out there and that he really likes to return kicks. Rivers said that from USC he liked the competitive atmosphere and that they teach you to always play your hardest. Lastly, Royal said that the campus tragedy at Virginia Tech made him appreciate everyone and everything around him.

- Tashard Choice thought that this was a great experience and that he'll never forget it. He said that he can't wait for the game on Saturday. Andre Caldwell said that he wanted to show the scouts that he belongs among the other top players in the country. He said that Mike Martz is a great guy and that you can see why he's been so successful. Caldwell mentioned that he talks to his brother (Reche Caldwell) everyday and that Reche tells him to just be himself and to try to showcase himself everyday. Choice said that he wanted to show the scouts that he can run in between in the tackles and that he understands the playbook well. At the end, he added that it's hard for him to compare himself to any other running back.

Jan 23rd (5:25 PM) - I've posted the practice report from this afternoon. I've got to run as I'm heading upstairs to the press conference. I'll have more notes tonight after I go on the radio. Remember, for more info on the radio, click the link on the front page of the site.

Jan 23rd (1:16 PM) - I've uploaded a ton of new pictures to the site, which you can find right here. I've also posted my report from this morning's practice. Again, this is the most up-to-date site on the internet. Where else can you find pictures from this morning's practice on the web? I'm off to the South Team's practice, I'll have a report up later today.

Jan 23rd (8:00 AM) - It's Day Three of Senior Bowl week, and we've got another two practices and a press conference on schedule for today. As always, I'll have the fastest, most up-to-date information on the web. Also, as a special treat, I'll be going on the radio tonight, back in Minneapolis, Minnesota. The station is AM 1500 KSTP and I'll be on a 6:50 Central Time. If you're not located in that market, click this link to listen over the internet. One more note, this week we've had a record number of visitors and page views for the site. Whether it has to due with the site being upgraded or just us being down here in Mobile, or both, I'd like to thank all of the readers that have visited and continue to visit the site. As I am a one-man show, the work is hard, but to know that people are enjoying the coverage really makes up for it. I'll be heading to the North team practice in a little bit, then I'll have another practice report up when I get back.

Jan 22nd (8:58 PM) - Here are some notes from this evening's press conference:

- Raiders coach Lane Kiffin thinks that this is a great opportunity for his staff to coach down here and is really excited about it. He likes the hands-on experience that he is able to have with the players. He said that he would compare what they are doing down here with the first three days of training camp. He's liked the fact that he can get a better feel for the players off the field in the meetings and during their meals. Kentwan Balmer, the defensive tackle from North Carolina is injured. The injury was new this week and they are going to have to bring someone else in to take his place. He thinks the strengths are the team's quarterbacks (Henne, Booty, Flacco). "Everything they do counts", referring to the players and that scouts are always watching what they do.

- 49ers coach Mike Nolan enjoys spending as much time as possible with the players. He thinks that this is also a great opportunity for him to get a better look at new offensive coordinator Mike Martz. When asked about things that he looks for in a player, he said that it's very valuable to have a player that can do more than one thing (returning kicks, long snapping, etc.) He's not sure whether LSU wide receiver Early Doucet is healthy enough to continue this week as he was injured during the South Team's practice today. He thinks that there are a lot of good football players in their team's secondary.

- Both Chad Henne and John David Booty are excited to be here and to be able to compete with the best players in the nation. Henne mentioned that the schemes and terminology are similar to the offense he was running at Michigan. Booty said that the terminology is different for him.

- Both Colt Brennan and Andre Woodson are happy to be here. Brennan talked about how Woodson is already being projected as a 1st Round pick, whereas he is more of an unknown commodity at this point. Woodson said that the numbering and the terminology of the plays were different for him than they were at Kentucky. Brennan mentioned that he had a background in the West Coast offense from back in his days when he was working with Matt Leinart and Carson Palmer. He said that he is getting re-familiar with the system. He said that it's a small learning process for him. Brennan also talked about the situation in Hawaii. He said that June Jones left because he needed a new challenge and is excited about what he can do for SMU (Southern Methodist).

Jan 22nd (6:52 PM) - I've got the analysis from the second practice of today posted. Sorry for the delay, the internet wasn't working at the Riverview Plaza, and we went to the press conference, which I'll have notes from later on tonight.

Jan 22nd (12:31 PM) - I've posted the analysis from the first practice of today. I've also added three more pictures to the original pictures page and added the rosters to the Senior Bowl Coverage page. I'll be heading back to the stadium in about an hour for the second practice. I'd be happy to answer any questions that you have, so feel free to send me an email: shawn@draftheadquarters.com

Jan 22nd (8:25 AM) - It's cloudy out this morning in Mobile, Alabama. For me, anything's better than being back in Minnesota where it's currently -4 degrees. Anyways, I'll be heading over to Ladd-Pebbles stadium in about 20 minutes to watch the North team practice again. After that, I'll head back to the hotel and get my analysis up. Following that, it will be the South team's turn to take the field at 1:45 PM. As always, I'll have the most up-to-date information on the web, so continue to check back.

Jan 21st (11:29 PM) - I've gotten a few pictures posted from today's practices. You can view them here. I'm also going to be doing some articles for Rotoworld.com, the top fantasy sports website on the internet. You can see my first article that I wrote for them right here; it's the same as my post on here, but the future articles will focus more on next year's fantasy rookies. One more note that I had been thinking about and talking to a scout about: Andre Woodson's stock really could take a huge rise this week. With him being the top quarterback at this year's Senior Bow, with both Matt Ryan and Brian Brohm sitting out, he has the chance to pass Ryan and take over the sure #1 spot as the top quarterback in this year's draft. Again this is more of my opinion as some scouts already have Woodson as their #1 quarterback, while others even have him listed lower than Delware's Joe Flacco.

Jan 21st (5:44 PM) - I've posted the Day One Practice Analysis. I've got to run as we're heading to the Opening Night Reception. Later tonight, I'm going to try and post some of the pictures from today.

Jan 21st (1:55 PM) - I've posted the weigh-in results from this morning. I'm heading off to Ladd-Pebbles Stadium for the first practice of the week. I'll have an updated report up from the practice when I get back.

Jan 21st (9:10 AM) - We've reached Day One of the Senior Bowl! Anyone else excited? I'll be heading over to the Riverview Plaza in a little bit for this morning's weigh-in. This should be interesting as we'll finally get to see the true heights and weights of each player. As soon as it's over, I'll post the results and my thoughts on what I saw. One more thing, the official rosters for the week still have not been announced, but once they are, I'll have them posted.

Jan 20th (9:24 PM) - What an amazing game between the Packers and Giants. While I could go into the X's and O's and how the Giants were able to win, I think there is one key to look at in the Giants success this year: The NFL Draft. The Giants had one of the best draft classes this year. I said it back in April when I gave them an A- Grade, and I'll say it again now. The Giants started things off with Aaron Ross, cornerback from Texas. Ross was a huge contributor this year and was a key part of New York's defense. In the 2nd Round, the Giants selected Steve Smith, wide receiver from USC. Smith had a great end to the season, in which he made a few big catches that really helped the Giants in the postseason. New York's 3rd and 4th Round picks, Jay Alford and Zak DeOssie, were both very good picks. Alford was a key not just in providing depth along the defensive line, but he was also a key long snapper for them. With their 5th Round pick, the Giants took Western Oregon tight end Kevin Boss. I've loved Boss ever since I first watched film on him last February. It's in writing in my 2007 Draft Preview and he's always been one of "my guys" from the 2007 Draft. In the 6th Round and with their first pick in the 7th Round, they selected offensive lineman Adam Koets and safety Michael Johnson. Koets provided depth along the offensive line, while Johnson was a huge contributor in the defensive secondary, starting five games at safety for the team. With arguably their best pick of the draft, New York selected Ahmad Bradshaw, running back from Marshall. Coming out of Marshall, Bradshaw was deemed by some to be a bit undersized and to not have elite speed for the running back position. He proved us all wrong. The Giants NFC Championship proves that drafting players successfully will help you in not just the long-run, but also the short-run. Congratulations to the Giants scouting staff and general manager Jerry Reese, as they all deserve a big round of applause.

Jan 20th (2:49 PM) - Just checked into the hotel here in Mobile. We arrived a few hours ago, but before checking in we headed over to the Riverview Plaza hotel, which is sort of the Senior Bowl's headquarters for the week. We got the credentials for the week and got a chance to talk to a few scouts. There is a slight chance of rain for part of the week, so we are really holding out hope that it stays sunny. A few things that I saw at the Riverview: 1) Ex/Ole Miss head coach Ed Orgeron is here. I found that pretty interesting. 2) UCLA defensive end Bruce Davis was really well-spoken when he was doing some small interviews with scouts. Quick fact, Tennessee quarterback Erik Ainge was on our flight from Memphis to Mobile. Ainge is the first alternate at quarterback, so if one of the other player were to get hurt or drop out, Ainge would step in.

Jan 20th (5:03 AM) - We're about to leave for the airport to head down to Mobile. I'll update the blog again once we reach the hotel in Alabama. Within the next day or two, I'll have the player rosters up, the results from the weigh-in tomorrow morning, and hopefully some pictures. See ya in Mobile!
