One Day Away

Friday, April 24th, 2009

We’re officially one day away from the biggest offseason event in any sport. With the draft less than 48 hours from now, continue to check back on the site as I’ll be sifting through the information that is coming out to tell you what is true and what are smokescreens.

- Aaron Curry reportedly feels that Lions will end up taking Matthew Stafford with the first pick in the draft. What’s interesting about this, is that there is not a chance that Curry’s agents would have let him say that if they thought that they had a realistic chance of going No. 1. From everything that I’ve been told, he’ll be a Chief if Kansas City keeps the No. 3 pick.

- Historically, B.J. Raji and Tyson Jackson make sense for the Cleveland Browns at No. 5, however neither of the players is worth paying Top 5 money to; especially when you have a Pro Bowl nose tackle in Shaun Rogers. Eric Mangini comes from the New England organization that used high draft picks on Richard Seymour, Vince Wilfork, and Ty Warren. I’ve been hearing that Orakpo is still their guy, but they are sending out mixed signals.

- Buffalo reportedly could be interested in trading up in the draft to select Andre Smith. They would need to move ahead of Cincinnati at No. 6, as the Bengals will make him their pick if he is on the board. However, it might be in Buffalo’s best interests to sit tight and see what players fall to them at No. 11 and No. 28.

- Minnesota Vikings head coach Brad Childress reportedly flew down to Florida on Wednesday to meet with Percy Harvin. According to my source, almost the entire front office and coaching staff is sold on making Harvin their pick, however Childress is the one person who isn’t. Him flying down to Florida shows that the team is trying to convince him to make Percy their pick, and he wanted to talk to Percy about his trouble off the field before going along with it. If they don’t take Harvin, assuming he’s available, then it’d be another case of the team siding with Childress, a la Jay Cutler.

- The NFL has given the St. Louis Rams the right to negotiate with any player of their choice once the Lions sign Matthew Stafford or Aaron Curry to their deal. However, for the Rams, who have been sending out smoke signals with talk of Mark Sanchez and Aaron Curry, the team cannot afford to pass on a left tackle. Giving them a day to negotiate with Jason Smith and Eugene Monroe may not be enough time.

Where Could Stafford Fall?

Thursday, April 23rd, 2009

It’s being reported that Aaron Curry has agreed to a deal with the Detroit Lions, but the Lions’ front office is waiting until tomorrow to hear from Matthew Stafford on whether or not he’ll agree to the contract that they have offered to him. Stafford’s agent, Tom Condon, has been talking to teams lower in the draft regarding his client’s “marketability” and where he could possibly go if Detroit doesn’t take him.

As we look at where Stafford could go, it’s not pretty. St. Louis has said that they don’t need a quarterback, Kansas City has Matt Cassell, Mark Sanchez would be a far better fit in Seattle, and Cleveland has Brady Quinn and Derek Anderson. As you continue to go down the order of teams, the next most logical landing spot is possibly Jacksonville or San Francisco. That’s also assuming that the Redskins and Jets don’t make a move up to grab him if he were to fall.

For Stafford, the best option is to sign with Detroit. While he’d like to get the biggest contract possible, and it’s hard to say what he’s being offered, falling to the eigth pick in the draft would be another Aaron Rodgers/Matt Leinart/Brady Quinn free-fall. The Lions need to lock up the player that they really want, it’s as simple as that.

- Potential smokescreen: The Seahawks are not going to take a quarterback at No. 4. I’ll believe it when I see it.

- The trade of Braylon Edwards to the Giants is reportedly off, with the Giants no longer seeing any hope of acquiring the Cleveland receiver. This rules out Michael Crabtree going No. 5 to the Browns, like I mentioned yesterday. You can also bet that players like Hakeem Nicks and Kenny Britt are going to be of interest to New York at the latter portion of the first round.

- The 49ers still have plenty of options with the No. 10 pick. Michael Oher could be an intriguing pick if he’s still available.

Inside Info

Wednesday, April 22nd, 2009

The draft is three days away and the buzz has never been higher this year for the draft. Here’s all the news that is flowing through the NFL. I’ll go team-by-team telling you what I’m hearing:

Detroit – They want Matthew Stafford, but they have a deal in place with Aaron Curry. If Stafford doesn’t agree to a deal by Friday, then Curry will be the pick. (Check my post below for my feelings on that subject.) The report still claims that Stafford will likely agree to a deal.

St. Louis – It’s Jason Smith or Eugene Monroe and it’s too close to call right now. I’ll know who it will be later in the week.

Kansas City – The Chiefs are locked in on Aaron Curry, but they’d like to trade down. Tyson Jackson is also a player they like, but him going in the Top 5 might be a smokescreen from what I’ve been told.

Seattle – They have the best pick in the draft because they’ll have a chance to choose likely from one of the top tackles, Michael Crabtree, and potentially Mark Sanchez. It’s too early to say, but chances are that Sanchez would be the pick.

Cleveland – They are NOT going to take Crabtree, according to a source I spoke to today. However, if Braylon Edwards is dealt, then it opens up a whole new situation, where Crabtree could then be taken. They like Orakpo and want to take him to add to their defense.

Cincinnati – Andre Smith…no questions asked.

Oakland – Hard to say at this point. Crabtree is an obvious option if he falls. If Jason Smith or Eugene Monroe falls, they will also get consideration. Jeremy Maclin is one other player to consider.

Jacksonville – Wide Receiver and Offensive Line are two options. They would like to trade down, however they’ll take the best player available if they stay at No. 8.

Green Bay – A wildcard because they could go in so many different directions, the Packers could go with Michael Oher, B.J. Raji, or Tyson Jackson. However, my source said to keep an eye on Everette Brown and Malcolm Jenkins.

San Francisco – The 49ers need a pass rusher and could take an offensive tackle. Raji is an option if he falls, however I have read that they love Oher.

Buffalo – With two first round picks, I think that they can afford to wait on a tight end and grab a defensive end and offensive tackle with their first two picks. Robert Ayers and Aaron Maybin are two options at 11, while Eben Britton could be a good fit at 28. If they went tight end, Brandon Pettigrew would be the guy.

Denver – Oh so many possibilites. They could trade up for Sanchez, stay and draft two defensive players at 12 and 18, or take a defensive player and Chris Wells with another pick. Tyson Jackson, Raji, and Rey Maualuga are all players to keep an eye on. Aaron Maybin too.

Washington – The Redskins are hoping that Everette Brown falls to them. They need a pass rusher and that is going to be the one area that they concentrate on.

New Orleans – Malcolm Jenkins will likely be the pick if he is there. Brian Cushing would be another option.

Houston – Clay Matthews or Brian Cushing, I think they’ll go with Matthews.

San Diego – They will go best player available, but they really like Eben Britton. Rey Maualuga and Tyson Jackson are two other possibilities.

New York Jets – They want Mark Sanchez! They’re willing to trade up to No. 8 with Jacksonville, however it’s unknown as to whether they’d be willing to go as high as the Top 5 to get their guy. If they stay put, Brandon Pettigrew and Josh Freeman are two options.

Tampa Bay – The Bucs would LOVE to have B.J. Raji fall to them, but Josh Freeman is the most logical pick here. Chris Wells and Brian Cushing are two other options.

Detroit – Any defensive player makes sense here. It all depends on if they sign Stafford. Like I mentioned this morning, if Curry goes No. 1, then Josh Freeman could be an option.

Philadelphia – I’ve been hearing Knowshon Moreno here. Brandon Pettigrew could be another option.

Minnesota – It’s Percy Harvin if he’s on the board. From what I was told today, they think that they could move down and still get Harvin. The Vikings think that by trading down and then having three second-round picks, they could fill all three of their major holes on the first day of the draft. They do like Alex Mack and would love to get him in the second round.

New England – While Darius Butler has been mocked here frequently, it could be a smokescreen. Remember, Bill Belichick doesn’t tip his hand very often, if ever. Larry English could be an option.

Atlanta – Brandon Pettigrew would likely be the guy if he’s here. I don’t have as much information on the Falcons.

Miami – While wide receiver is a glaring need, Bill Parcells historically has waited in drafts to grab a receiver later on. I know that Darius Butler has drawn some interest here.

Baltimore – Darrius Heyward-Bey was the first player that the team worked out this offseaon and he’s from right down the road in Maryland, so keep that in mind. A wide receiver is the most likely choice here. While linebacker appears to be a need, last year’s pick Tavares Gooden will likely step in for Bart Scott, who left for New York.

Indianapolis – Wide receiver could be an option, but their defense has holes in it. One source today said that Peria Jerry, Ziggy Hood, and Ron Brace are all players to keep an eye on.

New York – Hard to say because they could deal for Braylon Edwards. Wide receiver is the obvious need, it’s just a question of which one is on the board when they pick.

Tennessee – This is another hard pick which I don’t have as much info on. Remember to the Chris Johnson pick last year, they aren’t afraid to go out of the box to make a pick, so I think that Ron Brace could be a realistic option.

Arizona – Running back is the most logical choice. I think that Donald Brown is the most likely one here.

Pittsburgh – Offensive line and secondary are the two areas to keep an eye on. With so many fringe first-second round linemen, it’s hard to say at this point which one they’d like to get.

Monroe to St. Louis?

Wednesday, April 22nd, 2009

There is talk that the St. Louis Rams could go with Virginia left tackle Eugene Monroe with the second pick in the draft. According to one source that I spoke with, it’s down to Jason Smith and Monroe for the second overall pick. If I hear anything new, I’ll be sure to post it.

- According to Alex Marvez of Fox Sports.com, wide receivers Percy Harvin of Florida and Brandon Tate of North Carolina have both tested positive for marijuana. While Harvin still may be a first round pick, this takes a rather large hit on Tate’s draft stock. A mid-round pick who is coming off of a torn ACL, Tate could fall to the latter portion of this weekend’s draft, if not go completely undrafted.

- Former Tampa Bay head coach Jon Gruden is high on Percy Harvin.

- Wake Forest linebacker Aaron Curry has said that he is willing to take less money in order to be taken with the first overall selection. While, logically, it’d make sense that the Lions would want to sign the cheapest player, that’s not the right way to do business. You have to take into account that he’s a middle linebacker, and while you need defensive help, you cannot afford to pass on a franchise quarterback if you don’t have one.

An intriguing possibility that a friend suggested to me yesterday would be for the Lions to take Jason Smith or Curry with the first pick and try to land Josh Freeman with the 20th pick in the first round. Freeman, who is very similar to the Lions’ starting quarterback Daunte Culpepper, would be able to come in and learn for a year or two behing a player who plays the same way that he does. It’s an option, but I’d still say that Stafford will likely be the pick.

-If USC quarterback Mark Sanchez falls to Jacksonville at No. 8, expect to see the Jets attempt to make a move up the draft board to draft Sanchez. However, the price could be too high for them to make a move they had to trade into the Top 5

- Clay Matthews and Brian Cushing are the two most likely options for the Texans at No. 15 overall.

- The Minnesota Viking are looking in all possible directions for playmakers on offense. They reportedly worked out West Virginia quarterback Pat White yesterday and envision playing him as both a quarterback and wide receiver if they were to select him. Landing Harvin and Pat White would provide Minnesota with two dynamic players that the team could really use.

Tuesday’s News

Tuesday, April 21st, 2009

- Jason Jones of The Sacramento Bee reports that the Raiders likely will not address their defensive line in the first round. While B.J. Raji and Brian Orakpo would be possibilities, the Raiders need more help up front on their offensive line and in their receiving core.

- Knowshon Moreno is being compared to Walter Payton by some scouts. I actually had a friend ask me a few weeks ago, that if there was one player that I’d compare Moreno to, who would it be? I said Payton as well. Moreno has the same shifty running style that Payton did, and he also has the work ethic and competitive attitude that would support the comparison. Obviously he’s only going to be a rookie this year, but Moreno has some similarities to the Bears’ Hall of Fame running back.

- Matt Maiocco does a great job of outlining who the players are that the 49ers are considering with the 10th pick in the draft. The two most likely options right now appear to be B.J. Raji and Michael Oher, but a defensive end could also be an option.

- Matthew Stafford isn’t one of the top rated players on some team’s draft boards.

- The Rams supposedly have their eye on Hakeem Nicks with the 35th pick in the second round. I have Nicks rated as my No. 2 receiver in this year’s draft, so I’d be a bit surprised if he lasted that long. Assuming Baltimore doesn’t trade for a receiver, he could be an option for Baltimore with the 26th pick.

- LSU wide receiver Demetrius Byrd, who was in a car accident on Sunday, is expected to be okay. Byrd is projected as a fourth or fifth round pick.

New Mock Draft

Monday, April 20th, 2009

I’ve posted a new mock draft for today. I’ll be updating it frequently over the next few days as we get closer to the draft. Continue to check back for updated information regarding this year’s draft.

- Peter King of SI.com has a ton of good information in his “Monday Morning Quarterback” column this morning. He suggests that a trade between Washington and Kansas City would make sense. Washington would move up to get quarterback Mark Sanchez, who they are reportedly “beyond smitten” with, and the Chiefs would be able to move down and potentially pick up Tyson Jackson, who they reportedly love.

- Pro Football Talk confirms that B.J. Raji did not test posititve for any banned substances at the Combine. With this, there is a good chance that Raji could go in the Top 10. However, I remember a conversation that I had with a league source at the Combine who brought up the fact that Raji isn’t close to being the same prospect that Glenn Dorsey and Sedrick Ellis were at this time last year. While he’s a good defensive tackle, he’s not nearly as good as some of the tackles that we’ve seen in the past few years.

- Brian Orakpo would be a likely selection by Washington if he lasted until the 13th selection. However, I don’t see that happening.

- Many scouts have compared Oklahoma State’s Brandon Pettigrew to a “young Bubba Franks.”

- Nate Davis reportedly scored an 11 on the Wonderlic test. In addition to his learning disability, this calls into question whether Davis will be able to fully adapt to the NFL and be able to learn a team’s entire playbook at the next level. Davis’ draft stock has been sliding day-by-day and now he’s one player who could slide to the bottom of the draft.

Lions Not 100% Sold on Stafford

Sunday, April 19th, 2009

According to Don Banks of SI.com, the Lions are not completely sold on making Matthew Stafford the No. 1 overall pick. Through talking to one of my sources last week, I was also told that they are not set on taking him with the first pick in the draft; however, he still remains the favorite to be taken there.

The Lions have begun negotiations with the agents for Stafford, Jason Smith, and Aaron Curry. What is interesting about these developments is that Curry’s agents attended the Lions’ practice yesterday.

- The Broncos have scheduled a private workout with USC quarterback Mark Sanchez for Tuesday. They have the firepower needed if they want to trade up for him.

Peters Dealt to Philly

Friday, April 17th, 2009

The Buffalo Bills have sent Pro Bowl offensive tackle Jason Peters to the Philadelphia Eagles in exchange for the Eagles’ 28th pick in the draft, their fourth round pick, and a conditional pick in 2010.

You can now expect to see the Bills possibly look at a tackle with their 11th overall pick, potentially being Michael Oher.

- I’ve been told that Anquan Boldin would like to be traded to Miami, and that the Dolphins are his top option. I also know that Baltimore has offered their first and third round picks, but Arizona is still fielding offers for the star receiver.
