Saturday Morning One-Liners

Saturday, May 31st, 2008

I’ve finished the Panthers and Saints Post-Draft grades, so feel free to check those out.

- New Chiefs offensive coordinator Chan Gailey says “there’s no question” in his mind that Brodie Croyle can be a franchise quarterback.

- The Ravens have faxed Joe Flacco a copy of their playbook while he sits out passing camp due to an agreement between the NFL and NCAA.

- The agent for Raiders rookie running back Darren McFadden is expected to begin contract negotiations next week.

- NFL Network’s Adam Shefter reports that five teams are suitors for Dolphins disenfranchised defensive end Jason Taylor. The Saints, Eagles, Bucs, Cowboys, and Chargers have all shown a “varying degree of interest” in Taylor. The Cowboys have extra 3rd and 4th Round picks from past trades, so they could be an intriguing destination.

- Cowboys first-round picks running back Felix Jones and cornerback Mike Jenkins are both candidates to take over kickoff returns this season.

- Second-round rookie wide receiver Eddie Royal has stood out “both in maturity and skill” at Broncos OTAs.

- Second-year tight end Ben Patrick has reportedly impressed the Cardinals’ coaching staff this offseason.

- The Bills have signed seventh-round cornerback Kennard Cox to a multi-year contract, the Eagles have signed fourth-round safety Quintin Demps to a four-year contract and the Dolphins have signed fourth-round offensive guard Shawn Murphy to a multi-year contract.

- The Bears have signed the following draft picks: offensive tackle Kirk Barton, tight end Kellen Davis, linebacker Joey LaRocque, wide receiver Marcus Monk, offensive guard Chester Adams and defensive end Ervin Baldwin.

Update

Thursday, May 29th, 2008

- NFL.com senior analyst Pat Kirwan speculates that Chris Long’s contract with the Rams could be nearer in value to Jake Long’s than Matt Ryan’s.

- Beat writer Darin Gantt bets that rookie Jonathan Stewart will carry the bulk of the rushing load for the Panthers’ this season.

- First-round pick Mike Jenkins is “entrenched” as the Cowboys’ nickel corner, according to the Dallas Morning News.

- Several charges against Titans fourth-round pick Stanford Keglar stemming from his college days are expected to be dropped.

- Laurent Robinson keeps “looking better and better” during offseason workouts, according to Falcons beat reporter Steve Wyche.

- The Lions have been using Buster Davis at middle linebacker in OTAs.

- Troy Smith has reportedly outplayed the Ravens’ other quarterbacks during offseason workouts.

- The amount of guaranteed money in Matt Ryan’s contract is $27.3 million, not the originally reported $34.5 million, according to Profootballtalk.com.

- The Steelers are giving rookie Limas Sweed a chance to block punts.

- Matt Gutierrez “appears primed” to challenge Matt Cassel for the Patriots’ No. 2 quarterback job, according to the Boston Globe.

Wednesday Morning One-Liners

Wednesday, May 28th, 2008

I finished the Lions and Bucs Post-Draft grades yesterday. My goal is to finish up the rest of the NFC South within the next couple of days.

- Former Oklahoma State wide receiver Adarius Bowman is hoping to join the Saskatchewan Roughriders of the CFL. It’s pretty crazy to see what a poor week at the Senior Bowl, a non-workout at the Combine, and an arrest for marijuana will do to your career.

- The Washington Post reports that the Redskins have traded a conditional seventh-round 2009 draft pick to the Vikings for defensive end Erasmus James. One thing that I think a lot of people are overlooking is that Washington’s defensive line coach John Palermo also coached James when the two were at Wisconsin.

- Panthers rookie running back Jonathan Stewart is out of his protective boot and is expected to be ready by training camp.

- Bills running back Dwayne Wright is facing competition for the third tailback role from rookie Xavier Omon.

- Titans coaches have indicated that running back Chris Henry has “stepped it up” this offseason.

Tuesday’s News

Tuesday, May 27th, 2008

I wrote up the Post-Draft grades for the Packers and Bears yesterday, so feel free to check those out. I’ll continue to work on finishing the rest of them up over the course of the next week or two.

- The 49ers will give second-round pick Chilo Rachal a look at right tackle during June OTAs. Rachal, who played guard at USC, will apparently battle Jonas Jennings to start.

- Chiefs rookie wide receiver Will Franklin reportedly “looked as if he belonged” during voluntary OTAs.

- The Eagles will place fourth-round pick Jack Ikegwuonu on injured reserve before the start of the season. Andy Reid says Ikegwuonu was picked due to his “first-round talent” and future potential.

- LSU wide receiver/running back Trindon Holliday recently ran an outstanding 10.05 100-meter dash.

News

Monday, May 26th, 2008

I’m sorry for not updating as frequently as usual. This time of the year is really a dead time for the NFL Draft. Here’s some of the latest news:

- The Colts plan on using undersized rookie Marcus Howard to alleviate some of the pass-rushing burden from Dwight Freeney, who will make his return from a season-ending foot injury.

- Jamal Lewis reportedly showed up to Browns OTAs in “excellent physical condition and had a solid camp.”

- The Browns are tinkering with how Brady Quinn grips the football.

- Dolphins quarterback John Beck added 11 pounds this offseason and is up to 6′2/218.

- Former West Virginia defensive end Johnny Dingle went undrafted likely because of his lack of height.

Saturday Morning One-Liners

Saturday, May 24th, 2008

-  CBS 1300 Radio in Baltimore reports that Jason Taylor “wants to be a Baltimore Raven” and could be one shortly.

- Last year’s third round pick, wide receiver Paul Williams, has impressed Titans new Titans offensive coordinator Mike Heimerdinger. Titans 2008 fourth round wide receiver Lavelle Hawkins joined the team yesterday after finishing final exams at USC.

- The Dolphins have signed sixth-round offensive guard Donald Thomas to a multi-year contract.

- Last year’s seventh round pick, Zach Diles has been handed the Texans strongside linebacker job.

- Bengals running back Kenny Irons has “no idea” when he will be ready to play football again.

- Texans rookie linebacker Xavier Adibi is expected back on the field for next week’s OTAs.

- First-round pick Dustin Keller has been lining up in the slot at Jets Organized Team Activities.

Thursday Morning One-Liners

Thursday, May 22nd, 2008

- Steelers rookie running back Rashard Mendenhall still hasn’t recovered from the hamstring injury he suffered earlier this month. Mendenhall says he feels good, but the team is taking a “day-to-day” cautious approach before sending him back in.

- John Beck took the majority of first-team reps at the Dolphins’ OTA practice on Wednesday morning. Josh McCown went second with Chad Henne third.

- Justin Durant is running as the Jaguars’ starting strong-side linebacker during offseason workouts.

- Chiefs 3rd Round rookie running back Jamaal Charles doesn’t expect to steal carries from starter Larry Johnson.

- Packers coach Mike McCarthy revealed Wednesday that 2007 first-round pick Justin Harrell underwent “minor” back surgery earlier this offseason.

- Steve Breaston has reportedly made greater strides than any other Cardinal this offseason.

- Lions offensive coordinator Jim Colletto says Drew Stanton has been “reverting back to some old habits” during OTAs.

Matt Ryan signs

Wednesday, May 21st, 2008

- The Falcons agreed to terms with No. 3 pick Matt Ryan. NFL Network’s Adam Schefter reports it’s a six-year deal worth a maximum value of $72 million. $34.75 million is guaranteed. This is more than #1 Overall pick JaMarcus Russell got last year and also more than #1 Overall pick Jake Long got this year. Ryan’s massive contract makes him the leading candidate to start for the Falcons in Week 1.

- Packers defensive tackle Justin Harrell will not take part in the team’s OTA’s due to a back injury. This is the most recent injury that has forced Harrell to remain on the sideline. Between Harrell and Brandon Jackson, Ted Thompson’s first two picks from 2007 aren’t looking good.

- Giants defensive coordinator Steve Spagnuolo won’t rule out switching Mathias Kiwanuka from linebacker to defensive end if Michael Strahan retires.

- Redskins 2nd Round pick tight end Fred Davis apologized Tuesday for being late to rookie minicamp practice earlier this month. He said that his absence was “irresponsible” and said he “just want(s) to move on.”

- Giants safety coach Dave Merritt said that right now Michael Johnson is the starter at free safety. 1st Round pick Kenny Phillips will likely have to earn the spot as a rookie.

- Tyler Thigpen appears to have passed Damon Huard on the Chiefs’ depth chart.

- Giants tight end Kevin Boss gained 20 pounds during the offseason and is up to 6-6, 272 lbs.

- Roy Hall has been running as the Colts’ No. 2 split end behind Reggie Wayne at offseason practices.

Tuesday Morning One-Liners

Tuesday, May 20th, 2008

- Colts defensive end Dwight Freeney says his rehab from his Lisfranc fracture is “on track” and expects to be ready at some point during training camp.

- Matt Prater will face competition from undrafted rookie Garrett Hartley to be the Broncos’ starting placekicker. Hartley missed five PATs at Oklahoma, including three in ‘07, but flashed a strong leg while with the Sooners.

- Broncos coach Mike Shanahan has already annointed first-round pick Ryan Clady a starter.

- Rookie Kevin Smith has reportedly impressed the Lions’ coaching staff with his attention to detail and understanding of the passing game.

- Bills middle linebacker Paul Posluszny ran with the first-team defense at OTAs Monday. Posluszny is 100 percent recovered from the broken arm he suffered last year.

- Miami has signed three of their draft picks: 5th Round RB Jalen Parmele from Toledo, 6th Round RB Lex Hilliard from Montana, and 7th Round DT Lionel Dotson from Arizona.

Update

Sunday, May 18th, 2008

I added the Post-Draft grade for the Minnesota Vikings yesterday, so feel free to check that out. I’ve been asked how I grade each team and how I come up with which letter to give. The way that I grade a team’s draft is by analyzing what the team did with each pick that they had. If I liked the way that they drafted with each of their picks, then they will have a higher grade. If not, then they’ll have a lower grade. For the Browns and Vikings, for example, I also added into the fact that each of them traded away draft picks for veteran players.

- Browns coach Romeo Crennel said the thing that most impressed him about quarterback Brady Quinn as a rookie was his ability to lead.

- Bears coach Lovie Smith says Cedric Benson “is our starting running back right now. For someone else to be the starter, they’re going to have to beat him out,” Smith said. “Matt Forte has never played a down for us. He’s like all other rookies, starting from the bottom and working his way up … I’m hoping that Cedric will get back to form.” Smith also said that the Bears will consider carrying four running backs on their roster this season.

- Rams offensive coordinator Al Saunders believes Steven Jackson “has not even begun to reach his potential as a back.”

- Joe Flacco reportedly outplayed both Troy Smith and Kyle Boller at the Ravens’ three-day minicamp last week.

- Bengals wide receivers coach Mike Sheppard calls Andre Caldwell “more cable ready” than fellow rookie Jerome Simpson. Simpson will reportedly line up at the “X” position, where Chad Johnson plays, during upcoming minicamps.

- The Colts have spoken with the agent for center Jeff Saturday regarding a contract extension. This is interesting to note considering the Colts drafted three centers in this year’s draft, two of them being arguably the best available.

- The New Orleans Times-Picayune believes Tyler Palko could push Mark Brunell to be the Saints’ No. 2 quarterback.
