Pro Day Central

Tuesday, March 9th, 2010

If you’re looking for the best coverage of this year’s College Football Pro Day schedule, check out Gil Brandt’s page at NFL.com where he highlights every workout from around the country.

- It is being reported that Oklahoma State wide receiver Dez Bryant won’t be able to workout at his school’s Pro Day and will rather hold his own workout on March 25th. I’m beginning to wonder how bad this injury this that forced Dez out of the Combine workouts. He’s doing everything but helping himself right now, with no Combine workout and continuing to delay his workout; scouts haven’t seen him on the field since the first month of the season, so they are starting to wonder if something is up. Is his injury more serious than he originally let on? We’ll just have to wait and see.

The link above also mentions the fact that Perrish Cox won’t be allowed to workout at the Cowboys’ Pro Day due to him being suspended for the Cotton Bowl at the end of the season. Cox has several off-field questions and concerns, which is a big reason why he could be in for a fall on draft day.

- One player whose stock is currently on fire is Missouri linebacker Sean Weatherspoon. The former Tiger star is quietly moving up draft boards, and after his workout at the Combine, I’d be shocked if he slipped out of the first round. I’ve considered moving Sean ahead of Sergio Kindle as the top outside linebacker in this year’s draft.

- Some people consider Anthony Dixon to be this year’s version of Shonn Greene.

Arrelious Benn Declares for Draft

Wednesday, December 16th, 2009

It is being reported that Illinois junior wide receiver Arrelious Benn has declared for the 2010 NFL Draft. Benn will reportedly hold a press conference later today to discuss his decisison.

Benn had a down junior year, only hauling in 38 passes for 490 yards and two touchdowns. While the stats come off as alarming, much of this was due to the lack of production from the quarterback position. Benn is hands down one of the most talented receivers in the country and should have a good chance of going in the first round.

I’ve updated my wide receiver rankings to show the change. Benn finishes his career at Illinois with 159 catches for 2,221 yards and seven touchdowns.

Juniors Considering Declaring

Friday, November 20th, 2009

I recently posted an interview that I had with Georgia safety Reshad Jones where Jones revealed to me that he is seriously considering leaving for the NFL after this season. Jones is one of the top safety prospects in the country and is a potential first round pick. I’ve also heard lately that Wisconsin running back John Clay is considering leaving school for the draft. Iowa offensive tackle Bryan Bulaga has not made a decision yet, Rennie Curran also hasn’t made a decision, although he is considering leaving school, and there are as many as seven Florida Gators that could leave early for the draft. Illinois’ Arrellious Benn is hoping for a strong finish to the season so that he might have a good chance at going high if he decides to declare. As of now Oklahoma running back DeMarco Murray is reportedly leaning towards staying in school for his senior season.

- Citadel wide receiver Andre Roberts is an intriguing player in this year’s draft. Despite playing at a school where football isn’t its main focus, Roberts has established himself as one of the better senior receiver prospects in the 2010 Draft.

- Tulane wide receiver Jeremy Williams has received invitations to both the East-West Shrine Game as well as the Senior Bowl. Williams is one of the more under-the-radar wideouts in this year’s class.

Senior Bowl could head to Jacksonville

Friday, October 2nd, 2009

It sounds as though Draft Headquarters may be heading to Jacksonville or Tampa Bay for the next Senior Bowl. One key to bringing the Senior Bowl to Jacksonville would be Florida quarterback Tim Tebow. With Jaguars owner Wayne Weaver already announcing that the Jaguars could draft Tebow to attempt to raise their revenue and sell tickets, having Tebow play in the Senior Bowl in Jacksonville could be a great indiciation for the Jaguars as to what type of impact bringing in Tebow would have for the franchise. From a biased perspective, the weather in Jacksonville and Tampa Bay sounds great for late-January!

- With a shoulder injury that will now have cost him three games following this Saturday’s game, Sam Bradford is beginning to draw criticism from national commentators saying that he should have left for the NFL after last season. You know my thoughts on Bradford. While it’s easy to look back and say that he should have left, Bradford was just a sophomore last season and his lack of experience could have been a major flaw towards him having success in the NFL.

- Pro Football Weekly has some good notes on the stock of some draft prospects for 2010.

- I plan on having a new mock draft up at some point next week, so keep an eye out for that.

Welcome Back!

Monday, September 21st, 2009

Welcome to the brand new Draft Headquarters. In 2007, when I first started this website, I could only dream that the site could get this far. After two years of defeating the experts of ESPN, we decided that we needed to take this business to the next level and show the world just how accurate Draft Headquarters has actually been.

The new site, as you can see, is more colorful with pictures and figures to have much more activity than the last site. While I’ll be updating the blog everyday with news and notes from around the draft world, I also plan on posting articles on topics in both college football and the NFL. Like the last site, I plan on releasing a new mock draft every few weeks along with a change of the player rankings. I’ll be at the Senior Bowl and Combine and promise to come away with player interviews that will trump the ones from the past few years.

This is an exciting time at Draft Headquarters. With more to offer and added exposure, we feel that the site has finally taken the final step in becoming the top NFL Draft website on the web. Between our accuracy, reliability, and consistency, I promise that you won’t find a better site than this one.

Between my mock draft and my player rankings, I’ve shown that I’m not afraid to go out on a limb and project one player over another and it has paid off. Continue to check back, as we’ll be updating the site frequently over the next several months as we get ready for the 2010 draft.

My 2010 Draft Preview promises to be even bigger and better than the 160-page 2009 preview that included 226 player profiles and hundreds of other ranked players. You can pre-order the Draft Preview here, and it will be shipped out in early-April.

Thanks for your support,

Andre Smith Falling Fast

Saturday, February 21st, 2009

In light of yesterday’s news that Andre Smith would not work out at all this weekend, this story may be even more shocking:

It was just announced at the Combine that Smith literally left the Combine without telling anyone from the NFL and was just found a half hour ago. There are conflicting stories between himself and his agent about where he went. If you’re looking for the biggest faller in this year’s draft, here’s your guy. Smith may be lucky if he goes in the first round after what happened today.

1st Group of OL 40’s

Saturday, February 21st, 2009

Here are my unofficial results from the first group of 40’s today:

Will Beatty – 5.10, 5.03
Joel Bell – 5.03, 5.10
Alex Boone – 5.12, 5.19
Robert Brewster – 5.21, 5.31
Eben Britton – 5.03, 5.03
Gerald Cadogan – 4.97, 5.00
Antoine Caldwell – 5.19, 5.16
Trevor Canfield – 5.25, 5.37
Jon Cooper – 5.03, 4.97
CJ Davis – 5.50, 5.50
Robby Felix – 5.07, 5.15
Alex Fletcher – 5.25, 5.38
Ramon Foster – 5.53, 5.50
Xavier Fulton – 4.94, 4.85
Juan Garcia – 5.38, 5.38

Overall, Xavier Fulton out of Illinois was the most impressive of the first group. He displayed excellent quickness off the line with a 1.59 10-yard split.

Also, if a kicker can improve his draft stock without actually kicking, then that’s what USC’s David Buehler did today. He put up 25 reps on the bench yesterday and ran a 4.48 40-yard dash today.

Stafford May Not Workout

Friday, February 13th, 2009

Word on the street is that Georgia quarterback Matthew Stafford won’t be working out at next weekend’s Scouting Combine. Stafford could seriously use the exposure to maintain his draft status as one of the top picks in this year’s draft.

This move comes as no surprise to me. Stafford’s agent, Tom Condon, continues to tell his quarterbacks that he signs to skip the workouts. Last year he advised Matt Ryan to skip the Senior Bowl, this year it’s the Combine with Stafford. I guess we’ll have to wait to see what happens.

Tebow is Returning to School

Sunday, January 11th, 2009

Florida quarterback Tim Tebow has announced that he plans on returning to school for his senior season. He hopes to win a third National Championship and second Heisman Trophy. If he is able to achieve either or both of these feats, he could very easily go down as one of the best college football players of all time.
